Before you fly

Visa, flights & money for London from India

  • Visa for Indians

UK Standard Visitor visa: apply online, upload bank statements, ITRs, employment proof and bookings, then attend biometrics at VFS. Apply 6+ weeks ahead in summer.

  • Flights from India

Direct flights to London Heathrow from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad and more (9–10 hours) on Air India, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

  • Money & payments

Currency is the pound (GBP, about ₹110). Contactless cards and phones work everywhere, including buses (which do not accept cash). A forex card with low fees saves money.

  • SIM, eSIM & apps

Buy a UK eSIM before you fly or a SIM from EE, Vodafone or Three at the airport. Citymapper is the best app for Tube and bus routes.

  • Plugs & power

UK three-pin plugs (Type G), 230V. Indian plugs need an adapter.

  • Time difference

The UK is 4 hours 30 minutes behind India in summer (5 hours 30 minutes in winter).

Visa and entry rules change. Always confirm on the official embassy or government website before you book.

Vegetarian & Jain food

Where vegetarians eat well in London

London has superb Indian vegetarian food: Drummond Street (near Euston), Soho and Wembley's Ealing Road are the hubs, and many places understand Jain requirements.

  • Drummond St, Euston

    Diwana Bhel Poori House

One of the UK's oldest South Indian vegetarian restaurants (since 1971) — dosas and bhel puri.

  • Soho Street, Soho

    Govinda'sJain food

Pure-veg restaurant since 1979 with Jain-friendly no-onion, no-garlic options; 1 minute from Tottenham Court Road.

  • Ealing Road, Wembley

    SakonisJain food

Fully vegetarian Gujarati, South Indian and Indo-Chinese food; Jain-friendly as standard.

  • Drummond St, Euston

    Chutneys

    Good-value all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet.

How to ask: Say "Jain — no onion, no garlic, no root vegetables". Most London menus mark (V) for vegetarian and (VG) for vegan.

Insider tips

Save money and skip the queues

  • Save money

    Let contactless cap your fares

Tap the same card on every Tube and bus — daily and weekly caps mean you never pay more than a Travelcard, and you skip buying an Oyster.

  • Save money

Hop on the "Hopper" bus fare

Unlimited bus journeys within one hour cost a single fare, so changing buses is free.

  • Save money

Use TKTS for West End shows

The official TKTS booth in Leicester Square sells same-day discounted tickets — often much cheaper than booking online.

  • Local secret

    Stand on the right

On Tube escalators, stand on the right and walk on the left — Londoners notice.

  • Local secret

    Free Sky Garden views

Free Sky Garden tickets are released about three weeks ahead and go fast; set a reminder.

  • Best timing

    Crown Jewels first

Go straight to the Jewel House when the Tower opens at 9 AM; queues to see the Kohinoor grow quickly after 10 AM.
