Before you fly

Visa, flights & money for Malaysia from India

  • Visa for Indians

Visa-free for Indians for up to 30 days under the current extended scheme. Fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within 3 days before arrival; carry hotel and return-flight details.

  • Flights from India

Direct flights to Kuala Lumpur from most Indian metros (4–5 hours) on Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, IndiGo and Batik Air. KL to Langkawi is a 1-hour domestic flight.

  • Money & payments

Currency is the ringgit (MYR, about ₹19). Cards work in malls and hotels; carry cash for hawker stalls, temples and Langkawi taxis. Langkawi is duty-free, so chocolates and cosmetics are cheap.

  • SIM, eSIM & apps

Hotlink, Celcom or Digi tourist SIMs are sold at KLIA, or buy an eSIM. Grab works in KL and Langkawi.

  • Plugs & power

UK-style three-pin plugs (Type G), 240V. Bring an adapter for Indian plugs.

  • Time difference

Malaysia is 2 hours 30 minutes ahead of India.

Visa and entry rules change. Always confirm on the official embassy or government website before you book.

Vegetarian & Jain food

Where vegetarians eat well in Malaysia

Brickfields, next to KL Sentral station, has KL's biggest cluster of pure-veg Indian restaurants. Langkawi has fewer options, so carry snacks for island days.

  • Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields

    Bombay TalkiesJain food

100% vegetarian and vegan Indian menu; Jain dishes made without onion, garlic or potato.

  • Temple of Fine Arts, Brickfields

    Annalakshmi

Home-style South Indian vegetarian meals in a temple-run restaurant since 1984.

  • Nu Sentral mall, Brickfields

    Kailash Parbat

Pure-veg Mumbai chaat, thalis and sweets, right above KL Sentral station.

  • Brickfields & Masjid India

    Saravanaa Bhavan

South Indian dosas and meals, quick and reliable.

How to ask: Say "Jain — no onion, no garlic". At Malay stalls ask for "sayur sahaja, tanpa ikan bilis" (vegetables only, no anchovies).

Insider tips

Save money and skip the queues

  • Save money

Take the KLIA Ekspres or Transit

The KLIA Ekspres train reaches KL Sentral in 28 minutes, avoiding traffic and fixed-price taxi queues.

  • Save money

    Use the free GoKL buses

KL's purple GoKL city buses are free and loop past KLCC, Bukit Bintang and Chinatown.

  • Save money

Stock up on duty-free in Langkawi

Chocolates, cosmetics and kitchenware are duty-free across the island — buy gifts here, not at KL airport.

  • Local secret

    Thaipusam at Batu Caves

If you visit in January or February, check the Thaipusam date — the festival is spectacular but brings over a million devotees.

  • Local secret

Watch the towers light up from KLCC Park

The Lake Symphony fountain plays from 8 PM; the bridge in KLCC Park gives the best free photo of both towers.

  • Best timing

    Batu Caves before 9 AM

Arrive early to climb the steps before the heat and the tour buses.
