Before you fly

Visa, flights & money for Switzerland from India

  • Visa for Indians

Schengen visa through VFS Global for Switzerland: confirmed hotels and flights, travel insurance (minimum €30,000), 3–6 months of bank statements and ITRs. Apply as early as allowed in peak season.

  • Flights from India

Swiss and Air India fly direct from Delhi and Mumbai to Zurich (about 9 hours). Fly home from Geneva with one stop, or take the train back to Zurich.

  • Money & payments

Currency is the Swiss franc (CHF, about ₹95). Cards and contactless work almost everywhere, even mountain huts. Tap water is excellent — refill bottles at public fountains.

  • SIM, eSIM & apps

Buy a Europe eSIM before you fly or a Swisscom/Salt prepaid SIM in Zurich. SBB Mobile is the essential app for train times and tickets.

  • Plugs & power

Type J sockets, 230V. Slim European two-pin plugs (Type C) fit; thick Indian plugs do not, so bring a Swiss adapter.

  • Time difference

Switzerland is 3 hours 30 minutes behind India in summer (4 hours 30 minutes in winter).

Visa and entry rules change. Always confirm on the official embassy or government website before you book.

Vegetarian & Jain food

Where vegetarians eat well in Switzerland

Indian restaurants in Lucerne and Interlaken are used to Indian tour groups and understand Jain food well. Supermarkets (Coop, Migros) are great for affordable vegetarian picnics.

  • Grand Hotel National, Lucerne

    GoldenIndia LuzernJain food

Lakeside Indian restaurant with Jain/Swaminarayan, vegan and gluten-free options.

  • Brienzstrasse 38, Interlaken

    India VillageJain food

Long-running Indian restaurant offering pure-veg, Jain and no-onion-no-garlic dishes.

  • Unionsgasse 1, Interlaken

    Madras Jungle

Vegetarian North and South Indian food, open all day.

  • Interlaken

    Chotivala InterlakenJain food

Pure-veg and Jain Indian chain — reliable for families.

How to ask: Indian restaurants understand "Jain". For Swiss food, cheese fondue and rösti are vegetarian — ask "ohne Speck" (without bacon).

Insider tips

Save money and skip the queues

  • Save money

Compare the Swiss Travel Pass and Half Fare Card

For mountain-heavy trips, the Half Fare Card plus a few tickets can beat the Travel Pass — run both through the SBB fare finder before buying.

  • Save money

    Picnic from Coop and Migros

Supermarket salads, breads, cheese and fruit cost a fraction of restaurant meals — perfect for lunch with a lake view.

  • Save money

Check webcams before paying for summits

Jungfraujoch and Titlis tickets are expensive. Check the summit webcams in the morning and swap days if it is cloudy.

  • Local secret

    Find the DDLJ spots

Mount Titlis has a life-size Bollywood cut-out, and Saanen near Gstaad (on the GoldenPass route) features in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

  • Local secret

Stand on the right on escalators

Swiss train stations are fast-moving; keep right on escalators and wait behind the white line on platforms.

  • Best timing

    First train up the mountains

Morning trains to Jungfraujoch and Titlis have clearer skies and fewer crowds; clouds often build after midday.

FAQs

Switzerland trip questions, answered

What Indian travellers ask us most before booking.

How much does a 7-day Switzerland trip cost from India?

Plan about ₹27,000 per person per day for a comfortable trip with a Swiss Travel Pass, plus ₹55,000–90,000 for flights — roughly ₹2.4–2.8 lakh per person in total.

How do Indians get a visa for Switzerland?

Switzerland is in the Schengen area, so apply for a Schengen visa through the Swiss visa centre (VFS Global). Book your appointment early — slots fill up 1–2 months ahead in spring and summer.

Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?

Usually yes for 5 days or more with lots of train travel. It covers trains, boats, buses and museums and gives discounts on most mountain railways and cable cars.

Jungfraujoch or Titlis?

Jungfraujoch is higher and more dramatic but costs more; Titlis, near Lucerne, is cheaper and has the rotating cable car and a cliff walk. Pick one if you are on a budget.

Is Switzerland good for vegetarians?

Yes. Indian restaurants are common in Interlaken, Lucerne and Zurich, and vegetarian options like rösti, fondue and pasta are everywhere.
